The Future of Thoroughbred Aftercare Starts Here
Thoroughbred aftercare is one of the fastest-growing sectors in the North American equine industry, and it benefits far more than just the horses. With over 65,000 off-track Thoroughbreds (OTTBs) enrolled in The Jockey Club’s Thoroughbred Incentive Program, it's clear that these retired racehorses are finding second careers as valued partners in a wide range of disciplines. As the numbers continue to rise, so does the demand for knowledgeable, compassionate professionals who can guide these animals through successful transitions.
At Colorado State University (CSU), we’re answering that call with our Thoroughbred Makeover Project. In 2019, we launched this hands-on program where students are given the unique opportunity to retrain an OTTB over the course of 10 months, culminating in competition at the prestigious Retired Racehorse Project (RRP) Thoroughbred Makeover in Kentucky. This immersive experience equips students with real-world skills in training, horse care, and problem-solving, and helps them grow into thoughtful, skilled horsemen and women.
Thoroughbred aftercare isn’t just important—it’s essential. But to provide these horses with the second chances they deserve, we must invest in the next generation of equine professionals.
Join us in building a future where every Thoroughbred has a path forward—and every student has the tools to lead the way.
All gifts to this campaign support the CSU Thoroughbred Aftercare Project through the CSU Right Horse Course and Rescue Horse Fund.
